The instruments changed. The sky did not.
Celestial navigation is the practice of finding your position on the ocean using the sun, moon, stars, and a hand-held instrument that has not changed in any meaningful way since the 1730s. For two centuries it was the only method available to anyone offshore. It is still the only method that requires nothing outside the vessel — no signal, no satellite, no battery beyond what your eye and a watch can provide.
VAKA Sextant is a training application for people who want to understand how it works, and to practice doing it. It covers the complete workflow from sextant to plotted position: altitude corrections, sight reduction, the navigation triangle, star identification, error analysis, and the physical technique of taking a reliable sight at sea. Every calculation is built in. The mathematics is explained at two levels — for those with a navigation background, and for those starting from nothing.
It runs in any browser. It works offline once loaded. Nothing is tracked. Nothing is stored.
The sky is outside no one's control.
